Russian President Vladimir Putin has told U.S. President Donald Trump that Moscow will be compelled to respond to recent Ukrainian drone strikes, Trump revealed, as hopes for a ceasefire fade amid intensified aerial assaults in the ongoing three-year war.
In a statement on Wednesday, Trump said the two leaders discussed Ukraine’s drone attacks on Russian airfields and other military targets, as well as reciprocal strikes by both sides.
“Putin did say, very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields,” Trump wrote in a post on social media.
Al Jazeera’s Kimberly Halkett reported that Trump described the 85-minute phone call as “a good conversation,” though he acknowledged it was unlikely to result in immediate progress toward peace.
