UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern on Saturday following U.S. airstrikes against Iran, warning of a “dangerous escalation” in an already volatile region.
“I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today. This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security,” Guterres stated on X.
His remarks followed President Donald Trump’s announcement that U.S. forces had carried out “very successful” airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities, amid growing fears of a broader regional conflict.
Guterres urged all member states to prioritize de-escalation and honor their obligations under the UN Charter and international law.
“There is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly spiral out of control – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world,” he warned.
